Progression
Suzanne Yurdin
May 7 - June 1
Suzanne Yurdin’s abstract paintings emerge from her subconscious.  Her compositions are not planned or preconceived.  She allows her work to flow freely and intuitively, not predetermining composition or palette.  “Progression,” which represents a series of Yurdin’s work created over the last two years, documents and reflects the tone of her life at the time each piece was created.

Sharon Fishel / Jeffrey Smith
May 1 - June 14

Sharon Fishel and Jeffrey Smith are husband and wife who approach similar subject matter - primarily natural elements such as leaves, flowers, and seedpods -and create art through vastly different media and technique.
Sharon Fishel starts with extreme close-up views and creates richly layered abstract paintings with oil paint and glazes. Jeffrey Smith assembles natural and man-made forms from digital images, photograms and advertisements on the computer and then translates that into a large-scale monochromatic painting on canvas or paper

Portraits from Aftermath
Chris Scarborough
May 9 - June 20
Drawings and photographs by celebrated Southern artist Chris Scarborough. In these works, the artist -- whether by meticulous drawing or digital alteration -- creates a world that has survived some kind of ambiguous cataclysm and we are now being given a glimpse into a new reality in its aftermath  The big bang has happened, but just what kind of bang has taken place? The world we are presented with is similar to the one we know, but things are askew and a bit more absurd. The individuals in these works are distorted or fractured as their identities shift into a post-human condition.

Using the media of their choice,

April 10 - May 30
In recognition of Earth Day on April 22, the Fraser Gallery presents "Bethesda Green," an exhibition by artists incorporating reclaimed and recycled materials into their work.
Beata Drozd is a Polish artist based in New York. She creates mixed media collages from the pages of Vogue and Mike Fitts paints everyday objects onto reclaimed metal.
Mike Fitts is based in Charlottesville VA, "The subjects I paint in oils are drawn from the most generic of popular culture visuals, with an emphasis on objects that are used once, then discarded and quickly forgotten. The unexpectedness of elevating the importance of ephemeral objects to the status of art is what I find most interesting."

Flaunt: Photography & Fashion Collaboration
April 25 - June 6
Features new fashion portrait work by photographers Joshua Yospyn, John Ulaszek, Meaghan Gay, and Steve Goldenberg. The work is the result of collaborations with local fashion designers Dana Greaves, Taimur Baig, Lara Akinsaya, and Will Sharp, who will showoff their talent as their clothes grace the runway.
An artistic experiment of sorts, Flaunt aims to challenge and explore the notions of what constitutes fashion photography. “This unique visual event revolves around the concept that the beauty of art is its lack of fixed rules and definitions,” says Heather Goss, founder of Ten Miles Square. “Each photographer captured the essence of high fashion in their own terms, as did each designer.”

The Rose Harper Collection of South African Art
May 6 - June 6
A survey of works created during the apartheid era (1987 – 1994), by black artists, who today are recognized as the preeminent artists of South Africa. Within the rich diversity of their creative expressions are references – both direct and metaphorical - to barriers and transcendence.  Often referred to as propaganda or protest art, the imagery reflects the consciousness of a people. The art became the weapon of empowerment; the voice for those who were not allowed to speak without fear of prosecution.
Featured artists:  C. Kumalo, Ben Macala, David Mbele, Nat Mokgosi, Velphi Mzimba, Godfrey Ndaba, Hargreaves Ntukwana, and Winston Saoli.

Back and Forth
Wendy Ross
May 7 - May 30
The passage of time is an accident, having no connection with the change in configuration of solid matter in space…..the here and now contains in essence a myriad of there and thens….”
(From Mae-Wan Ho’s essay: The New Age of the Organism )
Exhibition features a selection of studio works created over the last decade and includes studies, maquettes, and small scale steel structures.  The artist refers to these works as constructs that distill and capture energy in the process of expanding and contracting. They range from the open and matrixial to the dense and armorial. Although her steel constructions are distinctly sculptural, Ross incorporates diverse and repetitive elements that she weaves, wraps, and coils before welding and riveting into intricate and openly engineered structures

Morandi: Master of Modern Still Life
February 21 - May 24
Giorgio Morandi (1890-1964), one of the most admired still-life painters of the 20th century, is renowned for his simple but stunning compositions.  Combining a subtlety of design with a meditative aura, Morandi’s finesse remains unrivaled.  For the first time in more than 50 years, a retrospective exhibition of his work is on display in Washington, D.C.  Morandi: Master of Modern Still Life features 60 works of art drawn primarily from collections in Italy, with key additions from collections in the U.S.  With paintings dating from 1913 to 1962, the exhibition elucidates the evolution of Morandi’s uncommon style.

Micheline Klagsbrun
May 27 - June 20
For many years Ms. Klagsbrun has immersed herself in Ovid’s Metamorphoses, tales of passion and transformation among gods and goddesses, people, animals, trees, rivers, stones. An invitation to exhibit at the Embassy of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela in 2008 sent the artist on an expedition into the indigenous myths of that country, discovering parallel stories. The tales she uncovered were of cosmic snakes, the mesmerizing power of the gaze, the floods of chaos and creation, the possibility of rebirth through water.

Women: vis-ŕ-vis
An exploration of women as icons
Teresa Roberts Logan
May 6 - June 7
Teresa Roberts Logan’s style emanates from an exploration of the theme of women in our world. Existing as icons and monoliths, they simultaneously function as life channels and sometimes - even decorative objects. The images reflect colorful global, usually solitary, women in the tradition of Fauvist works and folk art depictions of females, such as the Virgin de Guadalupe.

April 28 - May 31
Artistic contemplations on our natural surroundings. These new works study the shadows of trees: silhouetted in the sky, creating dappled patterns on the ground, and portraying the architecture of her Georgetown neighborhood.  The layers and juxtaposed images convey a lapse of time as the artist records specific moments of the day and follows the path the shadow takes with the sun.
