Grande Avenues
Marisa Baumgartner

Marisa Baumgartner builds installations to explore what she describes as "the overwhelming diminutive yet expansive sensation of self that is caused by the vastness of space, society and history."

Washington Color and Light
November 20 - March 6
Major works by the artists associated with the Washington Color School and their contemporaries. These works are united by an exploration of the language of abstraction, a desire to experiment with materials, and a love of color. The exhibition reveals the artistic innovations and individual approaches that shaped new directions in abstract painting and sculpture from the 1950s through the late 1970s.
The exhibition includes galleries dedicated to the monumental stripe paintings of Gene Davis; meditations on color and space by Thomas Downing; and hard-edge abstract paintings by Howard Mehring, Kenneth Noland, and Paul Reed. In addition, the exhibition includes sculptures by Rockne Krebs, Ed McGowin, and Anne Truitt, as well as glorious color-saturated paintings by Leon Berkowitz, Willem de Looper, Sam Gilliam, and Alma Thomas.
The exhibition's final gallery is devoted to a work by pioneering artist Robert Irwin, the central figure of
the California Light and Space movement of the 1960s

Katherine Mann
January 22 - March 5
Both artists create vivid abstractions, ripe with notions of growth, wonder and subjugation.  Within the context of aestheticism, both examine the limits of their medium, as well as notions of humanity within an expanded ecologic understanding of the living world.

At Last
Joyce Y-J Lee
March 12 - April 9

In this latest series, Joyce Y-J Lee oscillates between mediums, utilizing video, drawings and digital prints created during the time she recently spent in the Amargosa Desert in Nevada located on the edge of Death Valley.  Living and working amongst the hauntingly beautiful landscape as well as the local residents of this small mining community, Lee has yet again produced introspective works that highlight the use of light as meaning.

Karin Birch
March 4 - March 25

Remnants, Traces, and High Maintenance
Sacha Ingber
March 4 - March 25

Physical placement of objects and organisms in the world often appears random, unpredictable. Sacha Ingber's work investigates the driving forces and logic, or lack thereof, behind the organization of these things.  The materials and artifacts within the work are sometimes found and unaltered-bringing with them a distinct history  - or highly manipulated, transformed into something other.

Fossilized
Jens Praet
January 15 - March 12
The Belgium-born, Florence-based Praet has shredded and recycled copies of Art in America, Capitol File, Details, Fast Company and Robb Report mixed with clear resin to create five different designs - console, bench, side table, large table and large shelf - each in an edition of 12 with each design made from a specific title. Corresponding works for all the designs, except the large table, were also executed using shredded documents mixed with semi-transparent white resin to create the balance of the exhibition's nine works.   Fossilized is part of the designer's Shredded Collection, which originated out of his concern about sustainability and the amount of waste paper being generated globally.

Rosemary Feit Covey
February 18 - March 9
Covey's artwork is crafted using an artistic method of woodcut, specifically known as woodengraving, a technique dating back to the Middle Ages. In wood engraving, an artist cuts an image into a hard wood block using knives called gravers. After the engraving is complete, the block is inked then impressed onto a piece of paper using a printing press.

P(art)ners: Gifts from the Heather and Tony Podesta Collection
December 8 - March 6
A selection of nearly 30 photographs and sculptures drawn from more than 300 works that the couple has donated to NMWA.
The exhibition centers on images of the female body that offer multiple views of feminine identity. Figural works are complemented by images of contemporary architecture and public spaces, which are, the Podestas note, "completely and surprisingly asexual. Yet they are what remain of us when we're not there"

Eye Wonder: Photography from the Bank of America Collection
February 18 - May 22
Drawn from Bank of America’s renowned collection of international photography, Eye Wonder features more than 100 works by a wide array of artists, including Berenice Abbott, Margaret Bourke-White, Rineke Dijkstra, Gisele Freund, Candida Hofer, Graciela Iturbide, Dorothea Lange, and Hellen van Meene.

Iwan Bagus
March 2 - March 26
In this exhibit, Bagus shares his inward journey of memories, realities, and myths through his photographs. People, places and stories he left behind, came back to haunt his work like a pilgrimage of images. As he recalled Indonesian proverbs and legends, the rich and fantastical mythology of his childhood paraded in his mind like a living succession of quiet images on a contact sheet.

Heirlooms
Lauren Rice
February 5 - March 12
Similar to set designs for theatrical events, the landscapes Rice creates in her sculptural work are fantastical - elements appear to collapse, levitate, burst and grow within the gallery space.  With Heirlooms, Rice references gardens, flowers and vases, while simultaneously vulgarizing their traditional preconceptions as feminine and romantic.
