Athenaeum A Study of Passing Events J.J. Cromer September 16 - October 31 J.J. Cromer appreciates contemporary art, but claims what he's doing is different. "When I work on my drawings, I'm less interested in certainty. I sit in isolation, directing myself to ambiguity and exploration, skepticism and play." His process is intuitive and the results are meticulously detailed, brightly colored, repetitive forms linked by dynamic, rhythmic, two-dimensional patterns. His mixed media starts with pen, ink, and colored pencil, and sometimes involves collage, paint, and scratching. The results are breathtaking and fascinating and have earned him widespread recognition and acclaim. His work is in private and public collections including the American Visionary Art Museum, Intuit: The Center of Intuitive and Outsider Art, the Taubman Museum of Art, and the University of Virginia.

City Gallery Running with Scissors Geoff Ault November 6 - November 30 "At some point the artist must take a creative leap and forget the rules; run with the scissors this time and see what happens. I like to twist the composition, play with color and try out new ways of creating images. It is painting to the extent in that I use brushes, layering and blending. The only difference is that I have a canvas and brush that are electronic, not physical. This allows me to create work that can have various textures, colors that can be subtle or vibrant. It also allows me to alter images to the point that they are unrecognizable from the original image." - Geoff Ault

Corcoran Gallery of Art Washington Color and Light November 20 - March 6 Major works by the artists associated with the Washington Color School and their contemporaries. These works are united by an exploration of the language of abstraction, a desire to experiment with materials, and a love of color. The exhibition reveals the artistic innovations and individual approaches that shaped new directions in abstract painting and sculpture from the 1950s through the late 1970s. The exhibition includes galleries dedicated to the monumental stripe paintings of Gene Davis; meditations on color and space by Thomas Downing; and hard-edge abstract paintings by Howard Mehring, Kenneth Noland, and Paul Reed. In addition, the exhibition includes sculptures by Rockne Krebs, Ed McGowin, and Anne Truitt, as well as glorious color-saturated paintings by Leon Berkowitz, Willem de Looper, Sam Gilliam, and Alma Thomas. The exhibition’s final gallery is devoted to a work by pioneering artist Robert Irwin, the central figure of the California Light and Space movement of the 1960s All Photo Alumni Exhibition October 26 - December 17 In conjunction with this year's FotoWeekDC festival, the Corcoran's 2010 All Photo Alumni Exhibition will be held at Pepco's Edison Place Gallery. Curated by alumni Colby Caldwell (1990) and Cynthia Connolly (1985), the show features work by Corcoran alumni Chandi Kelley, Greg Braun, Michelle Repiso, Avi Gupta, Abigail Gunnels, Michelle Pritzl Rogers, Spencer Finch: My Business, with the Cloud September 11 - January 23 NOW at the Corcoran's inaugural exhibition presents new work by Spencer Finch. Finch's sculptural installations, photographs, and drawings seek to capture the elusive space between perception and the outside world, probing the intersections of science, nature, and memory. Using industrial materials to recreate individual experiences or particular sensations such as candlelight or the wind off of Walden Pond, he also draws from historical accounts by poets and philosophers to explore the persistence of human curiosity. Finch's works play with light, color, and time to remind his viewers that looking is never as simple as it looks.
Chuck Close Prints: Process and Collaboration A Love of Europe: Highlights from the William A. Clark Collection Ongoing Ranging from ancient Antiquities to Impressionist paintings, Senator Clark's collection today forms the core of the Corcoran's holdings of European art. The exhibition will include works by Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot, Jean-Francois Millet, and Edgar Degas.

Clothed or nude, male or female, even pieces that don't show a human being at all, they all express the situation of having a certain age, a certain gender, a certain stance and attitude. Wall labels will help explain matters, both in cartoons and in words.

Tolkien's consequential 1936 lecture on the literary work. James Rieck deftly arranges cropped images from historical paintings, seductive women, and medieval props to present a contemporary interpretation of the medieval classic Life Tastes Good In Disco Heaven consists of two video projections and two digital prints. Monaghan's work ultimately is about indifference and loss, which is illustrated by integrating corporate iconography into pseudo-religious landscape.
The House of Chance and Mischief Renee Stout September 11 - October 30 The House of Chance and Mischief is based on a recurring dream of Renee Stout's, in which she is walking through a familiar house and suddenly encounters a door that leads to new and mysterious rooms. Stout understands the house of her dream to be a metaphor for the self, and the newly revealed rooms to represent an expanding awareness of a world inside and outside of that self. Her dream, the challenges of friendship and family, and current events comprise the content of Stout's fourth exhibition at Hemphill. The show is a cacophonous party where guests peer into the lives of the characters developed throughout Stout's oeuvre. She presents a body of expertly rendered images and carefully manipulated objects, creating various tableaux that also speak as a personal narrative. Her work blends cultural heritage, personal mythology, and social responsibility from the perspective of an African-American woman. Utilizing imagery from African traditions, popular culture, and personal politics, she delineates pathways among cultures, communities, and individuals. Stout's open creative process continually introduces new possibilities for her role as observer, trickster, healer, and artist.

These pieces, along with a linear yarn sculpture by Fred Sandback, a spherical sculpture by Anish Kapoor, and luminous paintings by Mark Rothko, come together in ColorForms to explore the ways in which color remains an essential tool for artists, regardless of medium.

Directions: Pipilotti Rist Select screenings in October The fantastical narrative of Rist's feature debut is reminiscent of fairy tales and the Beatles' cinematic romps, and the power of color to liberate and inspire is as key to the film's plot as the actions of the eccentric characters.
Black Box: Superflex August 9 - November 28 Commercial imagery, such as the logos and signature color combinations that are increasingly inescapable aspects of our visual landscape, has inspired contemporary artists since even before the Pop era. For "Flooded McDonald's," (2009), Superflex (Jakob Fenger , Rasmus Nielsen, and Bjornstjerne Reuter Christiansen) meticulously constructed and filmed a life-size replica of the interior of an actual restaurant of the fast food chain. The artists borrow the cinematic vocabulary of documentaries, ads, and disaster movies to create this suspenseful, ambiguous drama. For reasons unknown, the patrons and staff have left the premises, leaving viewers behind to watch, think, and speculate.

Long View Gallery We the People Scott Brooks October 28 - November 28 12 new works by D.C.'s Scott G. Brooks. Brooks' work reflects the political and economic turmoil that takes up the head space of those who are paying attention. "We the People" maintains the detailed figures and storytelling themes Brooks has become known for, albeit on a much larger scale. In the past, Brooks' message was often subtle, hidden in his elaborate tableaus. In contrast, "We The People" blatantly speaks to the pop-cultural-obsessed and politically-charged landscape in which Brooks lives today.

The cream color of this piece is one of her signature colors along with black and red. Additional new works are also available.
Reflexions Susan Eder & Craig Dennis November 6 - December 8 "Reflexions are inkblots of oppositions. Each of us wrote one of two contrasting words, vertically using two different ink colors, on facing halves of a small piece of paper, then folded and pressed them together. Although those original blotted forms have been scanned, greatly enlarged and output as archival pigment prints on watercolor paper, they remain unaltered from their initial chance configurations. All imagery emerged serendipitously, beyond our control or intervention, purely a result of the random mingling of letterforms, fluid inks and viewer perceptions." - Susan Eder/Craig Dennis

My paintings reflect the energy drawn from working with people, the sharing of enthusiasm for art as a form of communication, and self expression" - Anne Chaddock
Morton Fine Art Solo Exhibition Susan Burnstine November 6 - November 13 Burnstine's photography explores the fleeting moments and subconscious realities between waking and dreaming. Burnstine portrays these "dream-like visions...entirely in-camera, rather than with post-processing manipulations". To do so, she uses one of 21 film cameras and lenses she handcrafted using plastic, vintage camera parts and random household objects such as trash bags, rubber and tape. Technically challenging and often unpredictable, these cameras produce soft "dream-like" imagery that resonates with the viewer.
