The Phillips Collection announced a new iPhone app that is available on iTunes. The press release states "The App provides instant access to the nearly 3,000 works of modern and contemporary art in the Phillips’s permanent collection; exhibition and collection audio guides; concert and artist talk podcasts; behind-the-scenes installation videos; interactive floor plans; exhibition and event calendars; visitor information; and one-click text message donations"
After a quick run-through of the app, here are a couple of observations: - Some of the information is out of date. For instance, the Curator introduction of the Intersections exhibition mentions that "the work remains on view until May 2, 2010" - Some of the audio elements are overly long for this format - The audio sounds like it was recorded via telephone and seems to only work in the left channel - In the video section the videos don't provide for navigation back to the app when they are done.
The app has lots of stuff, so more exploring is needed.

The recent Washington Post "Real Art D.C." contest claimed to search for "undiscovered" artists. What exactly does that mean? Where they "undiscovered" to the Washington Post (like America was "undiscovered" to Columbus), or are they truly unknown to the art public. One of the artists, Lisa McCarty, recently had an exhibition at the Athenaeum (May 6 - June 13). So, not sure what WAPO means by "undiscovered"

MFA has found a space to host an art lab that will encompass a studio, consulting space and gallery. The space is located @ 1781 Florida Avenue (@18th and U). MFA is presenting Small Works on Paper as the grand opening exhibit.

The National Air and Space museum is presenting an exhibition in their art gallery (who knew they had an art gallery!?) featuring photos of the planets taken by unmanned space probes. Michael Benson created the images by taking the original photographs and, in some cases, combining multiple exposures to provide a full picture. He then added color, based on scientific evidence of the actual color of the scenes. The result is a collection of incredible images that span the gamut from looking like an Edward Weston shot to Star Wars.
The exhibition space is on the second floor in the west corner of the building. The show will be on view until May, 2011.
